Chapter 5

A deafening sound of four heavy anti-aircraft guns roared to life, and the very ground beneath King’s feet shook as he crept from one hut to another. Each one was empty. He could only imagine the inhabitants had fled, or perhaps were some of those they were fighting. He stopped for a moment to look at the field where Clifton and hundreds of Marines were running for their lives as gunfire tore through them.

“No time to waste, Corporal.” Stone rushed on past King and smashed another doorway open only to find nine Prians sitting in wait. They weren’t expecting them and were watching the slaughter with glee from a window. Two were former Rhepoys, their rifles propped against the wall beside them. Most of them had their weapons sheathed or at least lowered. They soon turned, looking up in shock at the Sergeant.

“Shit,” he said to himself.

He didn’t wait for them to react and took aim at one of the mutinous Rhepoys, shooting him where he sat. He then fired at the rifles leaning against the wall as the other reached for one. Another picked up a Sezail, a long barrelled and clumsy locally made firearm. The Sergeant swung his Aquilla to knock it aside, but a shot rang out before he got to it. It hit his flank, just below the plates of his body armour. His body jolted slightly from the impact. He knew he was hurt, but he couldn’t let it stop him doing what he needed to do. He returned fire at his attacker, hitting him in the face, as the former Rhepoy once again reached for a rifle. He fired and blew his hand off, but in the time it had all taken, the others had drawn blades. One had picked up a Sezail and was swinging it about to take aim.

King appeared by his side, fired twice at the Prian, and shot down two more. Yet the others were on them on them in no time. King thrust his Aquilla into the collar of one, but as the body twisted and dropped, the weapon was pulled from his hands. He desperately reached for his Guardian, but both he and Rivers were barged out of the way as Madan shoved through, rushing headfirst into the three of them like a wrecking ball. The middle one was tossed back into the wall and crashed hard, while he cut at another, but his blow was parried. He reached down to the Prian’s foot and lifted it off the ground, sending him tumbling to the ground, where he thrust down into his chest. The last of them swung for Madan, but the blade was knocked aside by Rotaru who grabbed the rebel by the throat and drove him back.

Madan’s little brother had overestimated his strength, as the Prian also took his throat and stopped them both, lifting him off his feet. Madan’s blade thrust deep into his brother’s attacker, and his grip was lost. He collapsed back and was cut across the face by another blow.
